More about the Detroit Grand Prix

IndyCar race track with multiple racing cars in pit lane, teams and crew members working, grandstands filled with spectators, and large digital screens displaying race information, in an urban setting with tall buildings in the background.

The Detroit Grand Prix is one of North America's most historic street races, with roots dating to 1982 when Formula One first brought world championship racing to the streets of downtown Detroit. The event hosted F1 through 1988 before transitioning to CART competition. In 1992, the Grand Prix moved to Belle Isle, where generations of fans became familiar with the scenic island circuit set against the backdrop of the Detroit River and the city's skyline. Belle Isle remained the race's home for most of the next three decades, helping establish the event as one of IndyCar's signature venues.

In 2023, the Grand Prix returned to its downtown origins with a new street circuit winding through the heart of the Motor City. The current layout measures approximately 1.7 miles and features nine turns along Jefferson Avenue, Atwater Street, Rivard, Franklin, St. Antoine and Bates Street. The course combines long straightaways, heavy braking zones, elevation changes, and tight corners, creating frequent passing opportunities while showcasing Detroit's riverfront, skyline, and automotive heritage. Today, the Detroit Grand Prix remains a celebration of both world-class motorsports and the city that helped define the global auto industry.
