NASCAR Weekend Forecast Discussion

A generally favorable start to the NASCAR race weekend is expected at Martinsville Speedway with dry conditions Friday and Saturday. A deep ridge of high pressure will remain influential across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Friday will be the warmest day with sunshine and afternoon temperatures reaching the mid-upper 70s. On Saturday, increasing cloud cover should hold temperatures near 70°F, although dry conditions are expected for Cup Series practice and qualifying, along with the afternoon O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race.

Sunday's Cup Series race carries greater forecast uncertainty as an approaching southern-stream disturbance and increasing moisture challenge the persistent ridge. Precipitation is expected to spread eastward over the weekend, although differences in the timing and evolution of individual disturbances remain.

Guidance supports a meaningful rainfall risk across southern Virginia on Sunday. While a predominantly dry race remains plausible, scattered showers could affect the 2 PM start or portions of the 500-lap event. As a reminder, NASCAR will have wet weather tires for the weekend.

More about Martinsville Speedway

Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia, delivers classic short-track racing on its distinctive 0.526-mile “paperclip” oval. Opened in 1947, the historic venue has hosted NASCAR Cup Series competition every year since the series began in 1949. Long asphalt straightaways connect tight concrete turns with just 12 degrees of banking, putting a premium on braking, traction and patience in traffic. Close quarters create frequent contact, while pit strategy and track position can determine who reaches Victory Lane.

Weather adds another variable, with temperature and cloud cover influencing grip across the mixed racing surface. Beyond the action, Martinsville is celebrated for its famous hot dogs and the grandfather clock awarded to race winners.
