More about the Grand Prix of Long Beach
The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is one of the longest-running and most iconic street races in North America, first held in 1975 as a Formula 5000 event before becoming a Formula One race from 1976–1983. Since 1984, it has been a staple of American open-wheel racing, transitioning to CART and now the IndyCar Series. Often compared to Monaco for its prestige and coastal setting, the event has played a major role in the revitalization of Long Beach, evolving into a marquee motorsports and entertainment weekend.
Today’s race is held on a 1.968-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit that winds through downtown Long Beach, encircling the convention center and running along Shoreline Drive. The layout blends a long, high-speed front straight with tight, technical sections and a signature hairpin leading back onto Shoreline Drive, creating key overtaking zones and heavy braking demands. Over the years, the circuit has been refined and shortened into its current configuration, which emphasizes rhythm, precision, and track position—hallmarks of a classic urban street course.
