NORTH WILKESBORO WEATHER

North Wilkesboro Speedway
RaceWeather Forecast Discussion

7:05 PM ET, Sun Jul 19 weather update - A very moist, unstable air mass will support scattered thunderstorms capable of producing torrential rainfall through tonight.

Rainfall rates of 2.5–3.0 inches per hour could produce localized 2–4 inch totals, especially where storms train.

Flash flooding is possible, particularly in urban areas and along the North Carolina Coastal Plain.

DISCUSSION: A humid midsummer pattern will remain in place across northwest North Carolina through the weekend as a weak frontal boundary lingers nearby and several upper-level disturbances move across the region. Warm temperatures and increasing humidity will provide plenty of fuel for afternoon thunderstorm development.

The weather pattern becomes somewhat more active over the weekend as a strengthening upper-level trough moving into the eastern U.S. Shortwaves rotating through the trough will interact with the lingering frontal boundary, providing additional lift for thunderstorm development. Storms are expected to become more numerous during the afternoon and evening hours.

There is a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, a few stronger storms could produce damaging wind gusts, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and locally heavy downpours. Isolated hail and localized flooding are also possible.

Overall, this looks like another race day where flexibility will be important.

More about North Wilkesboro Speedway

North Wilkesboro Speedway is one of NASCAR's most historic venues, blending old-school character with a modern revival. Opened in 1947 and featuring a unique 0.625-mile asphalt oval, the track's uphill backstretch and downhill frontstretch create changing banking and constantly evolving handling conditions. After hosting NASCAR's premier series from 1949 through 1996, the speedway sat dormant for more than two decades before an extensive restoration returned racing to the legendary facility.

Today, North Wilkesboro hosts NASCAR and the CARS Tour along with grassroots racing and special events, reconnecting fans with one of stock car racing's most iconic and beloved short tracks.
