More about Dover Motor Speedway

The image shows the large bronze sculpture of a giant gorilla holding a race car in its hand. The gorilla's facial expression is fierce with its teeth showing and red eyes. The sculpture is outdoors against a blue sky with some structures and people visible at the bottom edge.

Dover International Speedway, nicknamed “The Monster Mile,” is a 1-mile concrete oval located in Dover, Delaware. Known for its steep 24-degree banking in the turns and 9-degree banking on the straights, the track delivers high speeds and physically demanding racing. Unlike many other short tracks, Dover’s concrete surface—installed in 1995—adds a unique challenge by increasing tire wear and reducing grip consistency, often contributing to dramatic race outcomes.

Opened in 1969, the track quickly became a staple on the NASCAR calendar. It has hosted at least one NASCAR Cup Series race every year since its debut, becoming one of the most iconic venues in the sport. At one point, Dover held two annual Cup races, making it a key battleground for playoff positioning and season momentum.

NASCAR legends like Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson—who holds a record 11 Cup wins at the track—have all tasted success at Dover. The venue has also been known for its intense restarts and high attrition rates, earning it a reputation for unpredictability and excitement. Today, while it hosts one Cup Series race annually, Dover remains a favorite among fans and drivers for its raw intensity and distinctive character.
