More about Iowa Speedway
Iowa Speedway, located in Newton, Iowa, is a 0.875-mile D-shaped oval renowned for its fast-paced, short-track racing and intimate fan experience. Designed with input from NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace, the track features progressive banking—12 to 14 degrees in the turns—which encourages multiple racing lines and tight, side-by-side action. Its compact layout and high-speed nature have earned it comparisons to Richmond Raceway and other short ovals, while still offering its own unique challenges.
The track officially opened in 2006 and quickly became a favorite among drivers and fans across multiple racing series. Built with the goal of attracting national motorsports attention to the Midwest, Iowa Speedway succeeded in drawing top-tier racing action, including NASCAR’s Xfinity and Truck Series, ARCA, and especially the NTT IndyCar Series.
IndyCar made its debut at Iowa in 2007 and quickly established the venue as a cornerstone of its short oval calendar. The tight racing, frequent lead changes, and physical demands of the track made it a standout event for both drivers and spectators. Iowa became known for hosting some of the most exciting oval races on the schedule, with dramatic finishes and high attrition rates becoming hallmarks of the event. For more than a decade, the race was a summer staple and drew consistent fan support.
After a brief hiatus from the calendar in 2021, IndyCar returned to Iowa in 2022 with renewed energy and support from Hy-Vee, an Iowa-based grocery chain that became the event's title sponsor. The partnership brought major investment and fan-focused entertainment, helping to re-establish the track’s place in the IndyCar landscape. Today, Iowa Speedway is once again a vital and popular stop for North America’s premier open-wheel racing series.
