More about the Circuit of the Americas
The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas is a world-class, purpose-built motorsport facility designed to host premier international racing. The Grand Prix layout stretches 3.426 miles (5.513 km) across 20 challenging turns, mixing sweeping high-speed segments with tight technical corners and over 130 feet of elevation change.
Construction officially began at the end of 2010 under the guidance of Tavo Hellmund, Kevin Schwantz, and famed track architect Hermann Tilke. The circuit was inaugurated on October 21, 2012, when Mario Andretti took the first ceremonial laps, and hosted its first Formula 1 United States Grand Prix a month later.
COTA ended a multi-year U.S. absence for F1, becoming the first track in America constructed expressly for the sport. Since 2012, there have been many memorable moments: in 2015, wet conditions led to a dramatic double-qualification day, with Lewis Hamilton sealing the drivers’ title in the race itself. Over the years, COTA has become a signature stop on the F1 calendar, praised for its layout complexity, elevation changes, and ability to test driver skill under intense pressure.
