Darlington Raceway in South Carolina is one of NASCAR’s most historic and challenging tracks. Nicknamed “The Lady in Black” and “The Track Too Tough to Tame,” its distinctive egg-shaped layout resulted from the track being built around a neighboring minnow pond. The unequal turns make car setup particularly difficult.
For decades, Darlington hosted two annual Cup races, including the Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend. NASCAR moved the race from its traditional date after 2003 and eventually consolidated Darlington’s schedule to one event. After considerable fan criticism, the Southern 500 name returned in 2009. In 2015, NASCAR restored the race to Labor Day weekend, reviving one of the sport’s longest-standing traditions.
