LATEST RACEDAY FORECASTS

Episode 91 of the Lapped Traffic podcast features NASCAR driver John Hunter Nemechek (@jhnemechek) talking about the Camping World Truck Series, while I discuss the Richmond forecast, as well as a very brief look back at a very hot Vegas weekend.

Because of the easy forecast for Vegas and Hurricane Florence’s impending landfall and slow trek across the Carolinas, I am going to forgo the weekend schedule forecast.

The biggest things to know about the weekend forecast is that it’ll be HOT and windy with highs near 100F and sustained winds in the 20-25 mph range in Saturday and Sunday with gusts in excess of 30+ mph.

If you’re going to the race, stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and have a great time!

At 11 AM EDT, Florence was located 20 miles SW of Wilmington, NC and was moving WSW at 3 mph. Max sustained winds are 80 mph and about 6-12” rain has already fallen across the area closest to the landfall point. An additional 24-30” rain is possible across area, while a swath of 4-8” rain is possible across portions of NC. Note that this forecast model image shows all new rain since 8 AM EDT Friday and goes through Sunday night, 8 PM.

Flooding from both storm surge in coastal areas and from “fresh water flooding”, from the rain, are occurring and not to be trifled with. Storm surge of up to 10 feet have already been reported along the coast.

This continues to be a dangerous situation. Remember, no matter where you are in the path of the storm, Turn Around, Don’t Drown!

    Watches & warnings:

A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for…
    * South Santee River South Carolina to Duck North Carolina
