Frequently Asked Questions

1)     Why RaceWeather.net?

Two reasons.  First, RaceWeather.com was already taken.  So this was the next step.

Second and most important, RaceWeather.net is your source of weather forecasts for race weekends.  This page is designed to be a low bandwidth solution for people traveling and looking for quick answers.  This includes racing fans, teams, drivers and broadcasters.

In addition, the forecasts will cover testing sites for the teams and Charlotte, NC. (Mooresville, NC, home of many NASCAR teams, had been forecast but the actual temperatures have not been reported there in months.)

2)     Who is RaceWeather.net?

Hi, my name is Aaron Studwell and I’m a meteorologist.  I am also a race fan.  The 2003 Winston Cup season, especially during the first few months, weather was a critical factor in deciding pit strategies and occasionally, the outcome of races.  Hurricane Isabel impacted the Dover race weekend and was also the launch weekend of RaceWeather.net.

A little information about me – I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan and a Master of Science degree in Meteorology from Texas A&M University.  I have worked in a variety of fields ranging from a Mechanical Engineer at the General Motors Proving Grounds for Delco Chassis (now Delphi) designing and testing base and antilock brakes to working as the Director of Research for two commodity-trading companies.  A major part of the Director of Research position was providing weather forecasts for the traders in a fast paced, high-pressure environment.

For those who do not know, I have recently resumed my role as the Director of Research. This time, I am working at Weather Insight, L.P. in Houston, Texas. My research will cover the financial, commodity and weather sectors. I will also be responsible for product development and sales.

3)     Are private forecasts available?

The short answer is yes.

The long answer is that a lot of the specifics would need to be ironed out.  For a one-time forecast, it would be easy.  For a series of test dates, a race weekend or an entire season, certain terms would need to be defined in advance.

If you are interested, please contact me at astudwell@raceweather.net.

4)     What is the forecast update cycle?

For the front page with upcoming week’s events, it will be twice daily, unless something dramatic happens.

5)     How long has RaceWeather.net been around?

The site was officially launched on September 13, 2003 with an update for Hurricane Isabel.  Within a few days, the race forecasts were available but most of the traffic was generated through the Papyrus community for NASCAR 2003.

Since an FAQ is a dynamic document, I will be updating this occasionally.  Feel free to write if you do have any questions, I will write back to you to the best of my abilities and post all of the good questions here.
